This course satisfies the training requirement for first-time applicants who wish to apply for a Maryland Wear and Carry Permit.  This course covers Maryland Law, safety, handgun types and function, concealed carry methods, use of deadly force, and live fire training and testing.

Note that this is NOT an introductory-level class.  It is expected that all students are competent and confident with their firearms.  Incompetent or unsafe firearms handling will be grounds for dismissal without refund.

Each course runs Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings from 5 PM to ~9:30 PM for classroom training plus Saturday from 9 AM until 1 PM in Pit #4 for hot-range live-fire training.

Student Requirements:

•21+ years old meeting MSP criteria: http://mdsp.maryland.gov/Organization/Pages/CriminalInvestigationBureau/

LicensingDivision/Training/WearandCarryPermit.aspx

For questions, please contact Lead Instructor: Jim Fontana, (jpcjf@wildblue.net).

Maryland is currently a "May Issue" state rather than a "Shall Issue" state with respect to concealed-carry firearms rights.  This means that the individual applying for the permit must provide evidence of a Good and Substantial reason to wear and/or carry a firearm. Successful completion of the prerequisite training DOES NOT guarantee a positive determination by the Maryland State Police and/or the Handgun Permit Review Board (HPRB) on your Wear & Carry Permit application.

Wear and Carry Permits MAY be issued to any adult citizen of Maryland who meets the following criteria:

  • 1. Has not been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor for which a sentence of imprisonment for more than one year has been imposed;
  • 2. Has not been convicted of a crime involving the possession, use, or distribution of a controlled dangerous substance;
  • 3. Is not presently an alcoholic, addict, or habitual user of a controlled dangerous substance unless under legitimate medical direction;
  • 4. Based on an investigation, has not exhibited a propensity for violence or instability that may reasonably render the person’s possession of a handgun a danger to the person or others;
  • 5. Has a good and substantial reason to wear, carry, or transport a handgun, such as finding that the permit is necessary as a reasonable precaution against danger.
  • 6. As of October 1, 2013, has successfully completed prior to application and each renewal, a firearms training course approved by the Maryland State Police.
