Course Overview:
Initial MD Wear and Carry INITIAL Training Requirements: Hours: 16
The NRA CCW course is specifically designed to meet the minimum requirements of all the different states, which issue Concealed Carry permits. In it, the course covers 10 different classroom lessons. This course meets the minimum curriculum of instruction in the training and use of handguns as prescribed by the Superintendent of the Maryland State Police, pursuant to COMAR, SECTION 29.03.02.05 of the annotated code of Maryland.
This is a two day course of both classroom and live-fire pistol qualification (if you need a renewal, it’s only a one day course.) Students must qualify with a score of 70% or better on the Maryland State Police Basic Pistol Handgun Course to receive their course completion certificate. Students will leave with an understanding of carry procedures, legal issues and use of deadly force. Course Length: 16 hours initial or 8 hours renewal. Course Topics: Review Safe Gun Handling Rules; Pistol Parts and Operation Ammunition knowledge and selection; Cleaning and Maintenance; Holster selection; Maryland Firearms Laws Use of Deadly Force; Mindset Interactions with law enforcement. Live fire session, Demonstrate Safety principals; Marksmanship Skills; Shoot a qualification course of fire. 70% rating to qualify. You must provide your own firearm, strong-side hip holster, concealment garment, mag pouch, and ~100 rounds of ammo. For those who don’t have/can’t get ammo, it will be available for purchase at normal, non-price-gouging prices. This is a serious, but FUN course if you love to shoot!!!
This course is for competent and safe shooters only. In order to shoot in this course you need to be able to SAFELY operate your firearm. If you are uncomfortable safely handling and operating your firearm you should NOT register for this training. We will disqualify and ask any unsafe shooters to cease participating in the course. (Note that SLSC offers numerous Basic Pistol Programs for individuals requiring instruction in pistol orientation and/or the fundamentals.)
Reasons for non-issuance of course completion certificates include, but are not limited to:
• Firearms safety rules violation
• Negligent discharge of a handgun
• Repeated failure to follow instructions/range commands
• Blatant disregard for Instructor, Range Safety Officer, and/or Range Officer
authority
Material covered in this course include:
• Maryland State Firearm Law
• Carrying and Transporting Firearms in Maryland and other States
• Home Firearm Safety and Safe Storage
• Handgun Mechanism and Operation
• Nomenclature
• Sight Alignment
• Position Shooting
• Dry Firing
• Range Practice
• Pistol Cleaning
**NOTE: MD Wear and Carry RENEWAL Training Requirements is only day two of the course: Hours Required: 8
What to Bring:
1. Pistol/revolver you intend to Wear & Carry, make sure it is clean, lubricated and functioning beforehand. The pistol should be a dedicated wear & carry self-defense pistol in a self-defense caliber (minimum 9mm or .38spl), and not be a “target”, or training pistol.
2. You should bring your pistols operators manual and a basic pistol cleaning kit. **NOTE: Please leave all firearms and ammunition in your vehicles until directed to retrieve them for the Classroom and/or Range. Special arrangements can be made if you do not own an appropriate pistol if requested in advance.
3. 100 rounds of factory fresh ammunition. If your handgun is new or you haven't fired it for a while, remember that a handgun should never be used for personal defense until it has had at least 200-300 rounds cycled through it.
4. You must have a proper fitting strong-side hip holster, that securely attaches to your belt, specific to the model of your pistol, to perform the drawing from concealment exercises we will practice. Soft nylon or holsters with a loose safety strap do not allow repeated safe re-holstering and are not allowed. If you do not have a proper holster, you will not be able to perform the exercises beyond the MD State Mandated W&C Qualification Course, which requires only shooting from the low-ready position and has no drawing from a holster. If this is the case, you will not receive the nationally recognized NRA CCW Certification.
5. Bring a light cover garment (center zipped light jacket, zipped hoodie or center button long sleeve shirt) for the drawing from concealment drills.
**Fundamental Rule – There is no live ammunition allowed in the classroom or in the same location as pistol cleaning or dry-fire practice.**
Lunch will be provided (ordered in from a local restaurant).

We’re thrilled to bring back the Ducks Unlimited Green Wing event at Sanner’s Lake Sportsmen’s Club on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM! After a hiatus, we’re reviving this beloved tradition of conservation, youth outdoor fun, and community spirit. Gates open at 8:00 AM for registration, closing briefly at 8:45 AM to limit traffic during the police dog demo, then reopening for late arrivals. Mark your calendars, bring the kids, and let’s make this a day to remember!
We’re shaping a fun-filled lineup, including:
Hay rides through our scenic grounds
Face painting for the kids (if we secure a volunteer—know a painter? Let us know!)
A police dog show demonstration
Supervised shooting with rifles and shotguns
Archery
Fishing stations
Birdhouse building (kids take them home!)
Decoy carving (pending Tommy Deagle’s availability)
This family-friendly event is open to kids of all ages for $20 each, which includes a DU youth membership—adults join free but must accompany kids (we’re not a daycare!). We’re finalizing logistics, so watch for updates in our next newsletter.
